Abia: Operation ‘Pick Used Water Proof in Aba and Get Paid’ Campaign Begins

The Governor of Abia State, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, has flagged off the ‘Operation pick used water proof in Aba and get paid’, as part of the pilot activities of the state’s anti-mosquito breeding campaign.

Flagging of the programme on Saturday at Abia State College of Health Sciences and Management Technology Aba, Ikpeazu said that the present administration is fully committed to the task of providing healthy and conducive environment for Abians. This, he said, is the reason for the construction of numerous roads going on across the state with durable drainage network, especially in Aba.

The Governor, who was represented by the Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Abam Uko, called on all to ensure that they always complement government’s gesture by being law abiding and maintaining all government investments in their domain, “which includes not dumping refuse in the constructed drainage network all over the state.”

Earlier in his opening remarks, chairman of the occasion, the Commissioner for Agriculture, Rt. Hon Uzo Azubuike, commended the State Technical Committee on Abia Numero Uno Agenda, Office of the Governor, “for the great and laudable initiative.” He called on all to support the state anti-mosquito breeding campaign by ensuring that they cultivate the habit of picking up waterproof in their environment and to ensure that all the drainage constructed by the Ikpeazu administration is kept clean and free from stagnant water so as to prevent the breeding of mosquitoes.

Azubuike also charged the management staff and students of Abia State College of Health Sciences and Management Technology Aba to be the first line mangers of the programme by educating and sensitising the public on the essence of a clean a clean environment.

In his welcome address, the Coordinator of the programme, Nnafor Nwachukwu, said that the aim of the ‘Operation pick used water proof in Aba and get paid’ is to prevent the blockage of Aba drainage network, distort mosquito breeding and imbibe the culture of environmental hygiene and cleanliness.

In their separate speeches, the Executive Chairman of Aba North LGA, Prince Stanley Ogbonna, the Aba North PDP Women Leader, Mrs. Udochi Emejiaka, and Chief Felix Emeluga assured of the support and cooperation of the good people of Aba in the actualisation of the campaign against the breeding of mosquitoes in Aba.
