As the sit-at-home order issued by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), holds today, the Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano, has warned that state workers who fail to come to work would be sanctioned.
To this end, permanent secretaries and heads of departments and agencies have been tasked with the duty of monitoring compliance to the memo.
According to a memo by the Head of Service of the state, Mr. Harry Udu, the governor called on the state workforce to resume work unfailingly on Wednesday after the May Day holiday.
The memo said: “His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Anambra State has directed that work resumes on Wednesday, 30th May after the Public Holiday on 29th May.
“All Public Servants must, therefore, report to their duty posts on Wednesday and the rest of the week.
“Perm. Secs and Heads of MDAs should monitor and report compliance unfailingly. Pls, circulate to all your staff.”
Similarly, the Anambra Police Command has debunked a newspaper on some national dailies that about 2,000 members of IPOB took to the streets and roads of Onitsha in Anambra State on a peaceful march to sensitise the public on the sit- at- home order set for May 30, 2018.
A statement made available to journalists by the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Haruna Mohammed, the command said the publication was not only fictitious and mischievous but one aimed at causing confusion.
The statement reads in part: “For the avoidance of doubt, the Indigenous People of Biafra is still a proscribed organisation hence all its activities remain illegal.
“The publication is not only fictitious but also mischievously orchestrated by those elements who are not happy with the prevailing peace in the state which the police and other law enforcement agencies are working tirelessly to maintain.
“The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, Garba Baba Umar, once again enjoins all the good people of the State to disregard alleged calls by any group urging them to sit at home on the 30/5/2018 and go about their lawful businesses.”
The CP however assured residents of the state that adequate security arrangements have been put in place by combined security forces in the state to nip in the bud any threat emanating from such groups.
The PPRO added that the police in the state would not hesitate to deal decisively with any individual or groups that would attempt to disrupt public peace in the state.
