NHEA 2018 rewards innovators in the Nigerian health sector

Key innovators driving the Nigerian health sector were specially honored at the 2018 Nigerian Health Excellence Award (NHEA) which was held weekend at Eko Hotel and Suites, Lagos.

Various industry players within the Nigerian health sector; public and private medical agencies; and government were all in attendance at the NHEA to witness the annually event which seeks to honour some players within the sector.

There were about 2,500 nominations as well as over 60,000 votes on the NHEA online e-voting portal for all the nominees, a process which organizers described as rigorous.

Speaking at the event, the Chairman NHEA Advisory Board, Dr. Anthony Omolola, said, the NHEA physical verification teams which is composed of various healthcare professionals visited nominated healthcare facilities across the country.

“They graded the facilities visited based on the set criteria and document sent by each nominee, the combination of the scores and online voting was used by the NHEA Jury to determine the winner of each category.

Earlier, Dr. Anthony had made it known that internationally recognized standards and criteria were used to evaluate nominees before they were presented to the public for voting.

He said the NHEA is devoted to recognizing and horouring individuals and organizations who have worked titedlessly to ensure exceptional service delivery in the health sphere. “Their selfless commitment to promoting quality healthcare has greatly impacted the lives of many having demonstrated professionalism and empathy in their outstanding service to humanity,”

He expressed confidence that those who have received the award in different categories such as medical, pharmaceutical, and biomedical will be positive influencers and motivators to drive the Nigerian healthcare.

Further, Dr. Anthony disclosed that that organizers will introduce the West African Healthcare Excellence Award which will span within the West African region and subsequently to the whole of Africa. “In this regard we have instituted a separate award for the sub-region which will be hosted in Accra, Ghana.

He added: “The board will begin Corporate Social Responsibility project with its nominees. This is NHEA-Nominees CSR Partnership project will entail working with one or group of nominees to execute community based project to enhance and bring succor to the less privileged in the society”

One of the key industry player who was specially recognized was Professor Fola Tayo, a Seasoned Pharmacist and the General Secretary of the Nigerian Academy of Pharmacists.

Receiving the award, Prof Tayo charged the Federal Government to channel more resources to the health sector as there was no need for Nigerians to seek medical attention outside the country.

“My message to the government is for them to support the health sector, because healthcare is a fundamental human right of all Nigerians which should be accessible by everybody in the country.
