Why you shouldn’t wear slippers to work

By Chisom Winifred

For those of us who work 9-5 jobs, it can be a very discomforting task to wear shoes 8-10 a hours a day 5 days a week. We may want to go loose a little, maybe on Friday’s and wear slippers to work instead. While this seems like a very good idea, here are a few reasons why you shouldn’t.

Can you imagine going to a job interview or showing up at an important business meeting wearing slippers? No, of course you can’t. So why then is wearing them on a regular old work day any different? Would your peers or superiors for that matter, take you seriously?

There is the issue of “dress the way you want to be addressed”. That faithful day you may decide to go loose and wear slippers might be the day someone important will want to approach you. Wearing slippers says you’ve given up.

It’s more reasonable to forego a five-inch heel for flat sandals but not slippers it’s like you forgot to put on shoes!

When it comes to office wear, the rules are all over the place. “Business casual” is the general guideline for most workplaces, but it means different things for different industries and positions.

But no matter the industry, no client will feel compelled to work with you when you’re on slippers. They’ll probably think; ‘if you’re lazy enough to wear slippers to work then you probably won’t pay serious attention to thier work.’

So, the next time you are dashing out the door for the office, take a moment to consider what you’re putting on your feet. Instead of sliding into slippers, slip on a pair of sandals or flats shoes. Because that one day that you’ve got those hideous slippers attached to your feet will be the day that you missed an opportunity to impress the heck out of someone actually worth impressing!
