SON hires Keyamo to fight Chinese over ‘tyres of death’

To ensure diligent prosecution, Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has hired Mr Festus Keyamo in the case involving two Chinese National who imported thousands of substandard and stuffed tyres to Nigeria ìn 2017.

Statement from Head of Public Relations at (SON), Mr Bola Fashina indicated that Keyamo made his first appearance in the case at the resumed hearing of the matter on September 26, 2018.

Mr Oluwafemi Olabisi appeared for Keyamo at the Federal High Court Ikoyi, Lagos before Justice C.M. A. Olatoregun to take over the prosecution of the trial.

Also, in court for the trial of Taolung Shen and Xu Jimg Yao and their accomplices accused of importing multiple thousands of substandard and life-endangering tyres into Nigeria were, Umaru Kawu and J. O. Olofindare Director, Legal Services and Senior State Counsel from SON respectively.

The defendants who were present in court with their counsel, Victor Opara Esq. are standing trial on charges of conspiring to import tyres which did not meet the relevant Nigeria Industrial Standards and stuffing various sizes of the imported tyres into one another, an act which constitutes a grave danger to the Nigerian populace.

The case was adjourned to 20th November 2018 for hearing due to other exigencies of the Court.

Fashina recalled that SON Director General, Osita Aboloma recently reiterated the dangers associated with the circulation of substandard products and expressed the determination of the organisation to prosecute all cases of Standards infractions diligently in line with the provisions of SON Act No. 14 of 2015.

He reaffirmed the SON capacity and determination to take on purveyors of substandard and life-endangering products and their collaborators in the interest of the safety of Nigerian citizens and the Nation’s economy.
