An unidentified man and a woman whose name was given as Mrs. Oluchi Nwafor were on Sunday discovered lying unconscious at Oduke, Obosi in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The woman, a mother of six, is said to be a bank staff.
Preliminary investigation by police authorities revealed that the victims were allegedly drowned and carried away by heavy downpour at about 6:30 p.m. on November 3, 2018.
The area, which is heavily ravaged by erosion, usually is usually at the mercy of a huge flood any time there is downpour.
A statement issued on Sunday by the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Haruna Mohammed on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Garba Umar, reads in part: “Following the distress call, Police Patrol Team attached to Obosi Division led by the DPO SP. Usman Ibrahim visited the Scene and rushed the victims to Unity Hospital Obosi.
“They were certified dead on arrival by a medical Doctor and Corpses Photographed and deposited at St Edward morgue for autopsy.
“However, preliminary investigation revealed that victims were suspected to have been drowned and carried away by heavy downpour on the 3/11/2018 at about 6:30PM from the area heavily ravaged by flood/erosion as a result of the downpour within the same locality.
“Meanwhile, the female body was later identified as Mrs Oluchi Nwafor ‘f’, Staff of First Bank Ochanja branch, Onitsha, while effort is ongoing to establish identity of the male victim.”
According to the statement, Police Patrol teams have been deployed to the affected areas to save lives and prevent hoodlums from taking advantage of the situation even as the case is under investigation.
The CP called on the public to stay away from flood-ravaged areas and take safety precautions in order not to fall victims of similar ugly incident.
