Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Adamu Mohammed has been appointed as the new Inspector General of Police (IGP) by President Muhammadu Buhari, News Express learnt from impeccable sources close to the Police Headquarters on Monday night.

He will, however, first serve in acting capacity.

The appointment effectively ends efforts by IGP Ibrahim Idris, who clocked 35 years in service tomorrow, January 15, 2019, to get service extension.

“Yes, it’s true that Idris is going. It will be officially announced tomorrow,” one of the sources told News Express.

The appointment of AIG Adamu Mohammed as the new police helmsman dashes the hopes of those campaigning for a police officer of Igbo extraction to be handed the job. It also brings to an abrupt end the career of all Deputy Inspectors General of Police (DIGs), as their junior has been made to leapfrog over them to become the nation’s top cop.
