The Imo State Governor-Elect, Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, Monday even visited Sam Mbakwe Airport in Owerri, where is “inspected the level of damages done by the fire incident that happened during the evening hours of Monday.
“I took time to encourage both the passengers and the staff to continue with their activities despite the inconveniences caused by the incident. Happy to note also that the incident did not affect flight operations”, he said.
GRASSROOTS.NG had reported that the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, has opened preliminary investigations into the fire incident at Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri at about 1400hours on Monday.
A statement signed by Henrietta Yakubu (Mrs.), the general manager, Corporate Affairs and available to GRASSROOTS.NG, reads: “The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria wishes to inform passengers and the general public that there was a fire incident that affected some parts of the terminal building of Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri at about 1400hours today.
“The fire was however curtailed swiftly by officers of the Aerodrome Rescue and Fire Fighting Services Department of FAAN.
There was no casualty and normal operations has since commenced at the airport.
“The Authority has commenced preliminary investigations into the cause of the incident.
Mrs. Yakubu reiterated that the Authority is committed to its core values of Safety, Security and Comfort.
