Amotekun Gathering Momentum As Ekiti Pass Bill Into Law

From all indications the proposed establishment of security regional outfit, Amotekun is gathering huge momentum.

The thrust behind this initiative is to effectively tackle the huge rate of insecurity in the Southwest.

There have been several reported cases of killing, kidnapping, rape and other social vices by Fulani Herdsmen, Bandit and Boko Haram terrorists in the country.

The Buhari led administration had promised to overhaul the security architecture of Nigeria during the election campaign.

He had in many occasions accused Nigeria’s former President, Goodluck Jonathan for being too weak to deal with insecurity in the country.

This course has been a total fiasco ever since President Buhari assumed office. Many of the staunch APC supporters already lost confidence in him.

While many of them have chosen to go silent, a few have publicly admitted that the President lacks the competence to move the country forward.

On Thursday, Lagos State Governor,  Babajide Sanwo hosted other Southwest Governors to further dissect issues on Amotekun.

The Inspector-General of Police was also reported to have been in attendance at that meeting Lagos.

Recall that the Federal Government had kicked against the formation of Amotekun  given that the issues of security in Nigeria are under the exclusive list.

This simply means the states do not have the constitutional powers to handle security as stipulated by the 1999 constitution.

After the meeting in Lagos on Thursday, the following day the Ekiti State House of Assembly has passed into law the act establishing Ekiti State Security Network Agency and Amotekun Corps.

The Speaker, Funminiyi Afuye, during the plenary on Friday said, “Having passed through the third reading, the bill has become a law.”

The bill will now be transferred to the state governor for assent. According to reports, the first two stages of passing the bill to the law were done on Thursday before the plenary was adjourned till today.

The lawmakers, who debated the bill exhaustively in the chambers on Thursday, spoke on the appropriateness of the proposed law in view of the security challenges facing the state, region and Ekiti State.

A public hearing was also conducted on the Bill later on Thursday. At the resumed sitting on Friday, the House Committee on Security presented the committee’s report.

The report was adopted by the committee of the House, then the Bill went into the third reading, which is passed through.
