Coronavirus: Lawmaker Says No Money Has Been Paid To Health Minister

After the outbreak of the coronavirus in Nigeria, it’s been all controversy. Nigerians think that the issue seems to be an avenue for political leaders to siphon funds from the government.

The Italian who was reported to have brought the coronavirus in Nigeria has not been properly identified. Nigerians have been demanding to see his photographs and full names, all to no avail.

With all these fundamental details missing, Nigerians are doubting the authenticity of the news. The perception is that certain group of persons in the Nigerian polity are behind this ongoing saga.

Recall that the Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire had demanded the sum of N620 million for the emergency response to novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

However, on Wednesday, the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, revealed that till now nothing has been disbursed to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC),

Contrary to the announcement that the money had been paid to the agency in full, the lawmaker stressed that no kobo was released.

He, therefore, asked the Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed, to immediately release the money to the health agency.

The minister, at a press briefing in Abuja on Friday last week, said the Federal Government had released every fund needed by the Port Health Services and the NCDC, which he described as the nation’s first and second lines of defence for coronavirus.
