WINET emphasizes Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights for the Visually Impaired in Enugu State, Nigeria

The Chairman Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD) Enugu State Chapter, Barrister Chikwe Nnamani says knowledge of Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) are necessary for the good health and wellbeing of every individual in the society.

Barrister Nnamani make the remark in Enugu at one-day workshop held on Wednesday 28th October 2020 by Women Information Network (WINET) for members of National Association of the Blind on Sexual Reproductive health and Rights as human rights.

In his remark the Chairman Enugu State Chapter of National Association of the Blind, Mr. Onyebuchi expressed happiness that the training was for both female and male members of the association and commended WINET for the initiative.

He urged participants to share information from the training with their peers and family members. Mr. Onyebuchi appreciated WINET for brailling the training manuals for them.

Earlier, the Executive Director of Women Information Network (WINET), Mrs. Miriam Menkiti explained that the training was to increase individual awareness of SRHR as human rights for young girls, women and men and empower them to claim those rights.

According to her, it is also for participants to become active in advocating for sexual reproductive and health rights.

Mrs. Menkiti said that the initiative titled “Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights Education and Counselling Services” is supported by AmplifyChange.

She said that over one hundred and fifty members of JONAPWD including Members of National Association of the Deaf Enugu State Chapter, members of National Association of Persons with Physical Disability Enugu State Chapter and Spinal Cord Injuries Association (SCIAN) Enugu State Chapter have benefitted from similar workshops.

She said that the training is being extended to students of some Special Education Centres in Ogbete Enugu and Oji River I Enugu State.

One of the participants and Woman leader of Blind females , Mercy Chinwe Agu said they were going home with useful information on sexual reproductive health and rights issues including Menstrual Hygiene Management,  Cervical Cancer, HIV and AIDS, Reproductive Rights and Safe Motherhood.
