Workers involved in the construction of drainage, dug an object that turned out to be a `bomb’ embedded in the soil.

According to eyewitness’ account, the workers at about 11am on January 22, at Nwezi Street, Inland Town, Onitsha were digging up the soil, when they saw the “explosive device seen in the soil’’.

According to Kehinde Omo, an eye witness,  an auto mechanic in the area said workers noticed a metal object and tried to pull it out not knowing exactly what it is.

It was when he meticulously pulled out the object that the people suspected that it was could have been an explosive.

Following a report to the Army Area Commander for Onitsha Cantonment, he assigned some soldiers to identify the object, who confirmed that it was a live bomb.

The bomb was taken to DPO, Onitsha area command that subsequently signalled the Bomb Squad from the Nigerian Police, Awka, to evacuate the bomb for detonation.

The security agencies had since advised Anambra people to be mindful of their environment because the bomb could have been buried in the ground for about 49 years.

It was being speculated that it could have been one of the stray unexploded ordinances, part of the scars of the Nigeria/Biafra civil war.
