The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), South-East, has called on the Governors in the zone to take proactive measures against rampaging activities of suspected Fulani herdsmen.

CAN said this in a statement issued after it elected a new chairman for the zone, in the person of Bishop Dr. Goddy Okafor.

Okafor emerged as the new CAN chairman in the South-East during an election held at the Holy Ghost Catholic Cathedral, Enugu.

Okafor, who is the presiding Bishop of Peculiar Peoples Ministry, Aba, and one-time chairman of CAN, Abia State, replaced Bishop David Eberechukwu, who died late last year.

The new CAN chairman said in the statement that the activities of the Fulani herdsmen across the country was a serious area of concern for the Church.

He called on the South-East Governors’ Forum, under the chairmanship of Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi to put adequate proactive measures in place to guard against sudden attacks.

“We note with regret the inability of the Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government to find solution to the rampaging activities of the herdsmen.

“The killings going on across the country is highly condemnable. To this end, we urge the Chairman of the South-East Governors’ Forum, Governor David Umahi, to galvanize his colleagues into putting adequate measures in place to secure the people of this zone,” he said.

He, however, commended the Federal Government over its effort during the burial of late former Vice President, Dr. Alex Ekwueme.

Okafor pledged to defend Christianity in the South-East and to see that the association moved to another level.
