Reasons Enugu House of Assembly Is Angry with Banks

Published

on

Members of the Enugu State House of Assembly, Tuesday, slammed commercial banks over what they called unwarranted charges being imposed on customers.

This was sequel to a motion moved at plenary by the sponsor, Rt. Hon. Chinedu Nwamba, representing Nsukka East Constituency, which was seconded by Hon. Iloabuchi Aniagu, representing Nkanu West Constituency.

Nwamba said the need for the motion arose out of myriads of complaint he was receiving from residents of Enugu State over the activities of banks operating in the state.

He said: “There is no gainsaying the obvious fact that a high percentage of Nigeria citizens are living below poverty line. The indices are there and points to the above fact.

“Therefore, it will be absurd to allow commercial banks operating in Nigeria, especially Enugu State to continue to add to the pains of the people by way of imposing unwarranted charges on every transaction carried out by their customers.”

The lawmaker said the unwarranted charges ranged from “transaction alert, interbank withdrawal charge, card maintenance charge, charge for withdrawals above certain limits, on-line transfer charges, among others. It is even more annoying that the banks do not inform or solicit the customer’s consent.

“All they do is to charge you what they care, deduct same and at the end of the month, charge you again for what they call monthly charges.”

He added that observation showed that the banks slam charges on customers based on independent bank policy and not on uniform basis as it was used to be.

“For instance, it is not what bank A charges for on-line transfer that bank B charges for same volume or transaction, yet the same commercial banks are expected to operate under the same rules and regulations,” he noted.

News Express reports that all the lawmakers who re-echoed Nwamba’s stand, said it was high time the CBN intervened to save helpless Nigerians from such exploitation.

Aniago had while seconding the motion, lamented that the banks were also neck-deep in hidden charges, especially in the area of loan facilities, a situation he said deserved the attention of the apex bank.

The House, therefore, urged the apex bank and other Financial Regulatory Authorities “to look into the activities of the commercial banks operating in Nigeria, especially in Enugu State with regards to the charges on customers’ transactions and stop the multiplicity of charges which they impose on customers’ accounts.”

In a remarks after commending the members for a robust debate and passage of the motion, the Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Edward Ubosi, described it as “a serious matter.”

He announced that the House would set up a committee, which would hold public hearings and come up with more measures.

“The committee will have one month to conduct public hearings; even if it entails going to the National Assembly, they should do so, in order to put this to an end,” the Speaker stated.

The state commissioner for Education, Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, who disclosed this while briefing journalists in her office on Monday, May 20, 2024, said that the school has been permanently shut down.

Chuma-Udeh said she had summoned the school’s proprietor and Nwonye to explain the incident that led to the brutal beating of the primary pupil.

“We received this unfortunate incident from an illegal school in Mgbakwu that a child was beaten to a coma over the weekend. On behalf of the State Government, we invited the proprietress of the illegal school as well as the teacher who purportedly beat the child,” she said.

The commissioner added that the teacher would be brought to book.

“As soon as the police are done, the teacher will face other institutions against child rights. She’s going to have the full wrath of the law brought upon her over her actions,” she said.

According to the country’s ministry of health, the controversial decision was made to ensure the country’s public health services could “guarantee full coverage of medical attention for mental health” for the trans community.

It also categorises “dual-role transvestitism,” “fetishistic transvestism,” and “other gender identity disorders” under the same bracket of mental illness.

The new law will change language in the Essential Health Insurance Plan (PEAS) to reflect the view of trans and intersex people as a mental health disorder.

Trans groups across Peru have loudly condemned the decision as a step backwards for the country’s already complex relationship with LGBTQ+ rights.
