IPC, WANEP and HUFFPED rally the media against hate speech online

The International Press Centre (IPC), Lagos-Nigeria in partnership with West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP) and Humanity Family Foundation for Peace and Development (HUFFPED) is currently implementing Combating Hate Speech Online Project funded by Peace Tech Lab .

The proposed actions under the project seek to advance and build public understanding, respect and support for girls and women as citizens who should not be discriminated against in functioning in the society via democratic, political, socio-economic and social development opportunities and integration.

The project also seeks to engage online journalists, bloggers and users of the social media platforms on the importance of conflict sensitive reporting as a means of combating hate speech online

In line with the above, IPC has scheduled to host a media round table on: ‘The Role of the Media in Combating Gender Related Hate Speech Online through Objective and Conflict Sensitive Reporting’.

According to information available to GrassRoots.ng, the media roundtable holds on Wednesday, August 29, 2018 at the IPC’s office in Lagos.

The overall objectives of the project, the Director, IPC, Mr. Lanre Arogundade, said are:

“To change public perception and stereotypes about women positioning and functioning in society

“To mitigate hate speech that hinders women participation in politics

“To engage media stakeholders and users of social media platforms on the use of technology tools to report hate speech online

“To deepen the role of the media (online journalists/bloggers) in combating hate speech online through objective and conflict sensitive reporting”.
