LaLiga: UEFA Club Competitions Model Threatens to Destabilise European Football

Published

on

  • A wider debate about UEFA plans is required to protect and nurture the foundation of European football: national leagues
  • LaLiga and other European leagues call for more democratic and inclusive approach, including more solidarity payments to clubs unable to participate in European competitions

UEFA’s proposal for the future of its Club Competitions threatens the future of European football, according to LaLiga and other European leagues.

A broader dialogue is needed between all parties to avoid creating an unfairly tiered system that harms the foundation of European football: smaller clubs and leagues.

Early this month UEFA approved the new so-called UEL2, a new European competition beginning in 2021 that would consist of 32 clubs primarily from lower-ranked leagues. This new competition would take the total number of clubs playing continental tournaments from 80 to 96.

This proposal has a major impact on the future of football in Europe. As such, it should be discussed more broadly. Critical issues concerning the long-term health of clubs, scheduling, broadcasting rights, competitive balance within domestic leagues, or the relationship between domestic leagues and European competitions have so far been ignored.

“While the European Leagues have accepted the introduction of a third club competition, UEFA cannot make these decisions in isolation from the leagues that they affect,” said Javier Tebas, president of LaLiga. “Europa League 2 will place greater demands on smaller clubs, who are the basis of healthy competition and the growth of European football, and risks creating a further divide within leagues of those who have lucrative European football and those who don´t.”

LaLiga calls for further consultation with leagues, UEFA and other stakeholders to ensure that all concerns are heard before the UEL2 and the overall model for UEFA Club Competitions (UCC) can go ahead.

European Leagues, the Association of European Professional Football Leagues, has presented a complete proposal for UCC including detailed inputs to improve access list and revenue distribution of the Champions League (UCL), Europa League UEL and the new Europa League 2 (UEL2). Within this context, the leagues outlined the need for a new and more inclusive access list and a new revenue distribution model where solidarity is properly recognised to restore and support competitive balance in domestic competitions.

European Leagues proposes an increase in solidarity payments from 7% to 20%, for clubs not participating in European competitions, smaller leagues and federations. This would considerably increase the long-term sustainability of the model and reduce the impact on clubs who are not participating.

Despite the refusal from UEFA to change the access list for UCL, the European Leagues proposal also includes a more open and inclusive access list and clear guidelines on scheduling, with priority given to domestic competitions. As the first phase of any European competition, domestic leagues must come first and the existence of new competitions, without proper planning, could affect their very existence.

More importantly, considering the upcoming decision on the revenue model, the European Leagues proposal includes a significant readjustment of revenues distributed between competitions, preventing the over-allocation of funds towards Champions League participants and eliminating the historical coefficient model that unfairly prioritizes past achievements over current sporting results.

“It’s imperative to review the way revenue is distributed in the whole UCC model, including of course the financial distribution of Champions League,” Tebas stated. “Through further dialogue, a more inclusive and democratic model of European competition can be created, that respects the economic stability and the competitive equilibrium of the national leagues. This is one of the greatest challenges faced today across our continent and if it is not tackled decisively, it could have disastrous consequences in the long term.”

Quotes from additional European leagues

“At the Eredivisie we take the issue of competitive balance very seriously. We have recently approved a new regulation in the Netherlands for sharing among all clubs a percentage of the revenue coming from UEFA Club Competitions. It would be logical for UEFA to follow this good example by implementing a fairer revenue distribution model that could compensate the growing financial gap between a few top clubs and all the others, both in international as well as in domestic competitions,” Jacco Swart, CEO, Eredivisie (Netherlands).

“In Denmark we have been having an open dialogue with our Federation, since it is our common interest to have a competitive and compelling league at national level and at the same time to have Danish clubs performing well in the international competitions. We have both asked UEFA to reconsider the way financial resources are redistributed so as to achieve these goals. We believe it is fundamental to review the whole distribution system, from Champions League to Europa League and the new competition, in order to generate a positive impact for all professional clubs,” Claus Thomsen, CEO, Divisionsforeningen (Denmark).

“The Swiss League and its clubs are very much concerned about the new access list approved by UEFA for the UEL2. Considering our current ranking, the number of Swiss Clubs with opportunities to access European competition would remain the same but with the new format we will have less clubs playing in UEL and more clubs playing for UEL2 which is a competition of lower level and prestige. The access to UEL is getting stricter, following the path of the Champions League to become a more elite competition.

The decision on the revenue distribution is still to be taken and we are requesting that UEFA increase the level of compensation in a substantial way in order to manage the huge financial gap between Swiss clubs regularly participating to UEFA Competitions and the remaining clubs playing solely at domestic level. It’s becoming imperative to better protect the competitive balance of national leagues to guarantee the long-term sustainability of European football,” Claudius Schäfer, CEO, Swiss Football League

“To be honest we were expecting UEFA to introduce an a even more inclusive access list for UEL2, but overall we welcome a format which will give to more clubs from more countries the possibility to play in Europe.

“It is now time to review the financial model. Champions League clubs are receiving too much money from UEFA. We need more money to be shared among all clubs, and especially, among those clubs not participating to international competition.

“At the Ekstraklasa we work to provide most of our clubs the chance to compete and win the Polish championship while dreaming to play in Europe. UEFA has a huge responsibility to keep this dream alive for all our clubs,” Marcin Animucki, President, Ekstraklasa (Poland)

MTN Nigeria has rewarded the Nigerian Super Falcons with 150 million naira following their remarkable victory at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The announcement was made at a celebratory breakfast reception hosted by the technology company in Lagos, in the presence of Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) leadership and female executives across key sectors, alongside a host of MTN executives who came out to celebrate the champions and reaffirm the company’s commitment to football, inclusion and youth empowerment.

The Super Falcons’ win goes down as one of the most thrilling in tournament history. Facing Morocco on their home soil, Nigeria came back from 2-0 down to secure a dramatic 3-2 victory, clinching their 10th WAFCON title and reinforcing their status as Africa’s most decorated women’s team.

Delivering the opening remarks, MTN’s Chief Marketing Officer, Onyinye Ikenna-Emeka, highlighted the Super Falcons’ win as an inspiration for Nigerian women. “The Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON) is a championship that has been held 13 times and Nigeria has won 10 times. This is no small feat. It is a testament  to how determined  Nigerian women can be when they set out to achieve something. What you have achieved not only makes Nigeria proud, but it makes us, even we women, proud. Here at MTN, we believe, and one of our values is ‘Can Do’, can do with integrity. Your final match  exemplifies that.”

As the official telecommunications partner of the NFF, MTN presented the 150 million naira reward to celebrate the team’s resilience and achievement. MTN director, Ifueko Okauru explained that 115 million naira would go to the players and 35 million to the technical team.

“At MTN we believe in the power of connection, not just through technology, but through our soul, through our spirits, what we share and what unifies us,” said Dr. Karl Toriola, CEO, MTN Nigeria.

Toriola described the company’s investment in the NFF as fruitful. “As proud sponsors of the Nigerian Football Federation, this long-term significantly financially-heavy investment in supporting the NFF has borne so many fruits. We followed you through every match, every challenge, every trial  and some of them losses. We followed you and we continue to support you and today we are so proud to say our efforts have not been in vain. We followed you for the big things, we followed you for the smaller things.

He added, “To the Super Falcons, you are more than athletes, you are inspirations. You are an inspiration for everyone in Nigeria, every young lady to go out there and make a difference. You are role models, you are ambassadors, and you are proof that when Nigerian women rise, the world will take notice.”

Captain of the Super Falcons, Rashidat Ajibade, thanked MTN and its board members for their warm reception and support. “We appreciate you a lot. We feel valued, we feel honoured, we feel respected, and this only inspires us to do better, and keep inspiring the next generation.”

“This win is for all of us,” she said, dedicating the 10th title not just to the current Super Falcons squad but to all the players who came before. While grateful for the milestone, she made it clear they were not content. “We want to take this to the next level. We want to be global contenders. We don’t want to be just local champions. It’s time to take it to the next level. We understand the huge responsibility on us,  and we hope that we can all work together, the Federation, the federal government, and also private bodies to keep investing and keep supporting  the Super Falcons Council so we can all  achieve this objective.”

The breakfast reception featured a classical string quartet, stirring soul-Afrobeats choir rendition that had the Falcons on their feet, dancing joyfully in celebration of their hard-won victory. Singer Praiz also delivered a performance that drew cheers from the audience and added to the festive energy in the room.

As the nation continues to celebrate their victory, this moment stands as both a reward and a reminder of what Nigerian women can achieve when backed by belief, investment and opportunity. The celebration was especially timely as it fell on Pan African Women’s Day, a fitting moment to honour the strength, resilience and achievements of Nigerian women on and off the pitch.

Nwosu hails Super Falcons: You’ve shown the Nigeria spirit

Super Falcons are 10th time WAFCON Champions

John C. Nwosu, governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has hailed the Super Falcons for lifting the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Women’s African Cup of Nations (WACON) held in Morocco for the 10th time, after a dramatic outing in Rabat, capital of the North African nation.

The Nigerian female team came from behind after a 2:0 lead they were handed down by the Atlas Lionesses at half time to turn the tide in a dramatic fashion, marked by energy, resilience, determination and skill, slotting in three goals in less than 30 minutes.

A totally enthralled Nwosu declared that feat clearly showed how with determination and focus, the most difficult tasks could be achieved and toughest challenges could be surmounted, adding that the feat embodied a lot of life’s lessons.

“What we saw today is the can-do spirit of that Nigerians are known for. It is a spirit that has broken many barriers and achieved great things. I particularly noticed the teamwork and synergy among the girls and their determination not to give up. It shows the reward of unity of purpose.

“As I watched our girls lift this beautiful trophy up, my spirit was also lifted. I am sure I am not alone. This spectacular achievement today shows how much we can achieve in Nigeria when we de-emphasise those things that divide the nation and emphasise the things that unite us.

“This is the focus of the ADC. We take it as a task to unite Nigeria by promoting unity, equity, justice and fair play in all facets of the society, knowing that together, working individually and collectively, we wake the sleeping giant.

“It is particularly so as we make deliberate moves to recreate a new Anambra where the government and the people will form an environment of common vision and move in the same direction, achieve a common goal. That vision has gained a strong fillip by this wonderful feat in Morocco.”

Well done girls. Once again, you have put smiles on millions of Nigerians, both home and abroad. May this joy continue to resonate everywhere in the life of our dear nation, now and in future.
