The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, has said it is currently prosecuting four Mexicans and four Nigerian collaborators at the Federal High Court, Asaba for manufacturing Methamphetamine in clandestine laboratory.

Methamphetamine is regarded as a hard drug and its unlawful production is prohibited by the authorities as it poses grave danger to humans and the environment.

The NDLEA, along with other relevant agencies, also destroyed forfeited 89,652.84 kilogrammes of assorted narcotic drugs worth over N100 million estimated street value.

“The narcotic exhibits seized within Delta State were jointly set ablaze in accordance with orders of the Federal High Court to all relevant agencies and the state government, Tuesday, at the NDLEA office in Ogwashi-Uku, headquarters of Aniocha South Local Government Area.”

Chairman of the agency, Col Muhammad Abdallah (rtd) described the destruction as symbolic and strategic both to the agency and drug control policies of the government, stressing that seized drugs remained a threat until they are destroyed.

He said: “In 2012, a total of 54,879.53 of drugs were destroyed and today, huge numbers of drugs will be destroyed.

“It is regrettable that despite all the efforts of the federal and state governments to address the scourge of drug cultivation and production in the country, criminals have continued to carry out these nefarious activities.

Giving the breakdown of the destroyed drugs earlier, the State Commander of NDLEA, Obiefule Dennis said, “Cannabis Sativa is 89,652.55 kilogrammes, Cocaine is 0.244kg and Heroin is 0.466kg. (Daily Trust)
