Why 1.2m JAMB candidates may not gain university admissions in 2019

Published

BY: Sandra Ani

Last Saturday, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) released the much awaited Unified Tertiary Matriculations Exams (UTME) which was written in April this year.

A breakdown of the figure indicated One million, eight hundred and eighty six thousand, five hundred and eight students (1,886,508) sat for the exams but JAMB only released results of one million, seven hundred and ninety two thousand seven hundred and nineteen (1,792,719) withholding the results of over thirty thousand candidates.

While the action of JAMB in releasing the results may have relaxed some nerves, especially parents and candidates, who sat for the mandatory entry point exams into any Nigeria tertiary institution, a deeper and careful analysis of the figures indicate over 1.2million qualified candidates may not after all gain admission into Nigerian University.

According to the National Universities Commission (NUC), Nigeria presently has 43 Federal Universities, 48 State Universities, and 79 Private Universities.

These 170 ivory towers have a combined carrying capacity oscillating between 520-540,000 slots. What this portrays is, the balance of university admission seekers from the 1,886,508 million that sat for JAMB in April this year will be distributed to the various polytechnic/Monotechnic and colleges of education spread across the country.

Some will out rightly remain at home for want of space. This elimination process is aside post-JAMB some universities do require.

Above portrait may seem like a dashed hope to some but it is not completely gloomy, this is where the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) steps in to mop up the excesses.

With the amendment and eventual presidential assent of the NOUN act in December last year, graduates of the University can now attend law school and the mandatory youth service which hitherto an exemption certificate from NYSC suffice.

With the evolution and revolutionary overhaul carried out by the Vice-Chancellor Prof. Abdalla Uba Adamu, little wonder why both local and foreign universities in Africa are feasting on NOUN course materials to get rich educational nutrients.

Aside from posting its study materials online for free download which by the way is a measuring gauge for quality of materials, the University may pass as the only internationally connected university in the country.

Partnership with open University of UK, Sussex University, Commonwealth of Learning (COL) Canada, Indrah Ghandi open university of India, Open university of South Africa (UNISA), African council for Open and Distance Education (ACDE) and International Council for Open and Distance Education (ICDE).

These partnerships bring in global best practices and as well sets higher academic benchmarks.

The Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, on Tuesday, said security agencies will go after individuals with fake university certificates in the country.

According to the minister, the individuals will be tracked after the committee set up by the Federal Government to investigate the activities of university certificate racketeers in the country submits its report.

The Federal Government had set up an Inter-Ministerial Investigative Committee on Degree Certificate Milling to probe the activities of certificate racketeers following an investigative report published by Daily Nigerian which exposed the activities of degree mills in the Benin Republic.

The investigative report, which exposed the illegalities perpetrated by some tertiary institutions in the West African countries, led to the Nigerian government placing a ban on the accreditation and evaluation of degrees from Benin Republic and Togo.

The committee set up by the Federal Government was also tasked with investigating Nigerian private universities established in the last 15 years. Recently, the committee invited memoranda from the public. Selected members of the committee also visited institutions in the Benin Republic.

While speaking at the first quarterly citizens engagement in Abuja on Tuesday, the education minister, Mamman, said;

“On the issue of the fake degrees, we set up a committee and we expect them to submit their reports soon. Once the report is submitted, I can assure you that individuals with fake certificates will be apprehended. They will be tracked by security agencies.”

Also speaking at the engagement, the Minister of State for Education, Dr. Tanko Sununu, noted that the quarterly citizenship engagement was aimed at creating awareness of the activities of the ministry.

He noted that the engagement would “ also promote mutual understanding with stakeholders and citizens, build and sustain public trust, and improve transparency and accountability in the sector.”

“Worthy of mention is that this engagement also aims to improve efficiency and streamline government operations by identifying and addressing bottlenecks,” Sununu said.
