Gas is cheaper, safer that kerosine in cooking – DPR

Department of Petroleum Resources, DPR, Port Harcourt Zonal office, has urged the public to switch to gas as the use of DPK popularly known as kerosene is dangerous.
Zonal Controller of DPR, Bassey Nkanga, who stated this to our reporter Tina Amanda, explained that oftentimes some petroleum product traders tend to mix fuel with kerosene before selling to unsuspecting consumers to maximize profit because kerosene is scarce and expensive.
He noted that gas is safer and cheaper to use, stressing that it is in line with the federal government’s mandate on the use of gas.
“We want to tell the public that it is safer and cheaper to use gas. Do not forget that petrol is cheap and kerosene is expensive and in that case, there is every tendency that people will tend to mix kerosene with much fuel and sell to the public without the people knowing.
“This same adulterated kerosene will be filled in gallons and sold in markets and it poses a severe risk, whereas DPR controls the quality of gas that is being sold to the public. So, we encourage people that it is cheaper and safer to use gas”
He also said that the DPR is planning to embark on the use of gas enlightenment campaign in all the rural areas, worship centres, motor parks and market places across the state.
“We want the use of gas to penetrate all nooks and crannies of the state. That is why we are embarking on public enlightenment campaign because the federal government wants everybody to use gas even those in rural communities”
