Covid-19: WINET gives succour to women, girls in Ebenebe community of Anambra State

An Enugu-based non-Governmental Organization, Women Information Network, WINET, has distributed palliatives worth thousands of naira to indigent women and girls at Ebenebe Community, Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra State, to cushion the impact of the novel Coronavirus disease, also known as COVID-19 on them. Items distributed included rice, beans, noodles and sanitary pads

The gesture, according to the Executive Director of WINET, Mrs Miriam Menkiti, is to identify with the vulnerable people at this critical time, when several homes struggle to keep body and soul together.

Mrs. Menkiti noted that the outbreak of Coronavirus disease had left many families with growing inability to make ends meet, hence the decision by WINET to identify with this category of people, as part of the campaign, which has been on in the community for more than twelve months.

She further explained:

“We feel that a good way to end the campaign we started a year ago is to identify with the people especially at this critical time when COVID-19 is fast undermining personal, national and international economies. So, we have brought this token with the help of our sponsor, Mundo Cooperante of Spain. The success we have achieved in this project, which was aimed at ending community acceptance of child and forced marriages in Ebenebe Community, could not have been possible without the financial support from Mundo. Once again, we are grateful to the people of Ebenebe for all the support we enjoyed in the course of this programme”.

Responding on behalf of the women, the wife of the traditional ruler of the community, Lolo Dorathy Nnaegbuna, was full of praises for WINET for being mindful of the poor and vulnerable in the community.

She prayed for God’s continued blessings upon the organization and its sponsor.

Other women, Mrs Maryjane Nbiko and Hon Gloria Nwankwo, appreciated the organization for remembering them at a time that survival has become unusually difficult.

A young girl, Otitodilichukwu Enemuo, who spoke on behalf of the girls, described the mission of WINET to Ebenebe as life-saving and appreciated the extension of the organization’s milk of kindness to them.
