UN Appoints Nigeria As Coordinator, Poverty Eradication Group
The United Nation has appointed Nigeria as the coordinator for the newly launched poverty eradication group.
The group according to the UN is aimed at confronting complex and multi-sided challenge posed by poverty to humanity around the world.
The President of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Mr. Tijjani Muhammad-Bande, in a statement issued Wednesday, was quoted to have said that poverty was the most formidable obstacle to attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Muhammad-Bande, who spoke at the formal inauguration of the group at a high-level meeting on ‘Poverty Eradication Strategies’ in New York, lamented that poverty had become a blot on humanity’s conscience, adding that Covid-19 pandemic has made the already bad situation to be worse.
He said with 30 founding member states and still growing, ‘Alliance for Poverty Eradication’ is the ‘signature event’ which is being chaired by Nigeria as its Interim Coordinator.
The UNGA president stressed that to alleviate the problem, the group should pull together all the factors and interests in poverty eradication and serve as a one-stop networking, information sharing and bridge-building centre.
Muhammad-Bande stated: “Before the onset of the pandemic, 2.1 billion people were classified as poor globally, with 767 million living in extreme poverty. It is estimated that by the year 2030, more than 100 million people would have relapsed into poverty, due to COVID19 and climate change.
“The Alliance should provide a mechanism for interrogating the poverty challenge from all possible, or at least, multi-disciplinary angles. There is no amount of time and attention given to poverty eradication that is too much.”
Also, the Charge d’affaires ad interim of the Permanent Mission of Nigeria to the United Nations, Ambassador Samson Itegboje, said Muhammad-Bande had demonstrated his commitment to leave no one behind by launching the initiative at the outset of the decade of action and delivery for sustainable development.
The Nigerian diplomat, who chairs the group as the Interim Coordinator, said being the topmost priority goal of the agenda for sustainable development, eradicating poverty in all its forms and dimensions is important now more than ever.
Itegboje added: “Evidence indicates that poverty is the foundation of most social vices and crimes, such as terrorism, illegal migration, conflicts, violent extremism, intolerance, fraudulent practices, exclusion, piracy, human trafficking, drug trafficking and abuse and corrupt practices both in high and low places.”
Itegboje noted that it was against this background that his delegation wished to stress that the time is ripe for the international community to develop structures and strategies to address the scourge of poverty.
According to him, “The Alliance for Poverty Eradication must therefore offer hope and clearly point us to the right direction, particularly coming at a time when the dismantling of economic activities globally as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, is projected to revise gains already made in the achievement of the 2030 agenda as well as push additional half a billion people into extreme poverty.”
A 30-year-old teacher at Landmark School Mgbakwu in Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra State, Faith Nwonye has been arrested for allegedly beating an 8-year-old pupil into a coma.
The state commissioner for Education, Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, who disclosed this while briefing journalists in her office on Monday, May 20, 2024, said that the school has been permanently shut down.
Chuma-Udeh said she had summoned the school’s proprietor and Nwonye to explain the incident that led to the brutal beating of the primary pupil.
“We received this unfortunate incident from an illegal school in Mgbakwu that a child was beaten to a coma over the weekend. On behalf of the State Government, we invited the proprietress of the illegal school as well as the teacher who purportedly beat the child,” she said.
“We’ve handed the matter to the police for further investigations, as we await Mr Governor’s directives. Meanwhile, the school is closed down indefinitely because it’s not supposed to exist in the first instance. Any parent who is enrolling his/her child in an illegal school is doing so at his/her own peril.
“To the proprietors of private schools, anyone running an unapproved school in Anambra is a criminal. It’s a criminal offence to run an illegal school in the state.
“Whether the school is legal or not, it’s criminal to beat a child. According to the doctor, the chances of survival of the child is 20%.”
The commissioner added that the teacher would be brought to book.
“As soon as the police are done, the teacher will face other institutions against child rights. She’s going to have the full wrath of the law brought upon her over her actions,” she said.
“Anambra state abhors violence to children, women, and any other person. It’s not part of this administration and Mr. Governor is against such.”
The Iranian President, Raisi has been confirmed dead alongside others in a helicopter crash.
The body of the President however could not be identified due to burns beyond recognition.
According to information, A foreign minister was also involved in the crash and a list of others. They are; Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian, Governor of Eastern Azerbaijan province Malek Rahmati, Tabriz’s Imam Mohammad Ali Alehashem, The Pilot, The Copilot, Crew Chief, Head of Security and Bodyguard.
The rescue team were at the crash site of the helicopter carrying the president and the discovery came after a long night of searching in freezing conditions.
Shortly before the discovery, Iranian Red Crescent Society head Pir-Hossein Kolivand said the situation was “not good.”
According to Reuters, the helicopter was completely burned in the crash.
Additional and Unfortunately, there is a possibility of martyrdom of all the passengers of the helicopter.
