Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu has arrived in Asaba, capital of Delta State for a meeting with other governors under aegis of the Southern Nigeria Governors Forum (SNGF) to address the growing issues of insecurity and other matters affecting the regions and Nigeria as a whole.
The Southern Nigeria Governors Forum is the umbrella body for all the seventeen governors in South-West, South-South and South-East geo-political zones of Nigeria.
According to the statement issued on Tuesday by Governor Sanwo-Olu’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Gboyega Akosile, the meeting is an intervention by the governors to jointly brainstorm and address burning issues in the Southern part of Nigeria.
The regional security meeting is holding less than twenty hours after Governor Sanwo-Olu hosted a very crucial stakeholders meeting on security in Lagos, to address the challenges posed to the state.
Like Lagos, the Southern Nigeria Governors Forum meeting is expected to critically evaluate the current security situation in the country, the implications for southern Nigeria and proffer an immediate and long term solution so as to keep the region safe and secure for the citizens.
The SNGF, will hold in the banquet hall of the Delta State Government House, Asaba.
Some of the governors who are already in Asaba as at 11:30am for the crucial meeting are the host governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa (Delta), Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF), Dr. Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti); Chairmen, South-West Governors Forum, Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu (Ondo), Governors Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Nyesom Wike (Rivers) and Dapo Abiodun (Ogun).
It would be recalled that the Southern Nigeria Governors Forum held a virtual meeting last Tuesday at the instance of Governors Rotimi Akeredolu (Ondo), Ifeanyi Okowa (Delta) and David Umahi (Ebonyi) who are chairmen of the South-West, South-South and South-East Governors Forum respectively.
The virtual meeting was attended by 15 out of the 17 governors in the Southern region of Nigeria.
It was during the virtual meeting that the governors agreed to meet in Asaba today for another meeting that will harmonise their positions towards addressing the insecurity and tension in the country, among other issues.
APC Defends Buhari Against PDP On His Borrowing Spree
The All Progressives Congress (APC) said the loans obtained by President Muhammadu Buhari’s are tied to specific infrastructural development projects across the country.
The party defended Buhari’s borrowing spree saying that the projects will become the legacies of the current administration.
The APC’s submission was contained in a statement on Tuesday by its National Caretaker Committee Secretary, Senator James Akpanudoedehe in reaction to the position of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who had warned that Buhari’s excessive borrowing may plunge Nigeria into bankruptcy.
However, the APC replied that the PDP were only trying to seek relevance after seeing that projects they couldn’t execute during the sixteen years they were in power at the federal level are getting completed by the Buhari administration.
The APC added that, unlike the PDP which embezzled the country’s resources and diverted money meant for projects to personal pockets, the Buhari government is focused on providing critical infrastructures for national development.
Akpanudoehehe said: “The sinking PDP is panicking due to its dwindling fortunes as the All Progressives Congress (APC) registered members hit over 40 million, with PDP members, including governors leaving the party in droves and joining the APC.
“While the PDP continues to clutch on straws as it sinks into political oblivion, the APC-led federal government and states governed by the APC are busy providing critical infrastructure, expanding access to education, providing health facilities and economically empowering citizens.”
“Perhaps, the PDP is referring to the litany of abandoned projects it left behind all over the country despite spending 16 years in power and receiving unprecedented earnings when crude oil sold for as high as $150 per barrel.
“The President Buhari government from inception took a good, progressive, patriotic and apolitical decision to complete the abandoned projects and Nigerians have been the ultimate beneficiaries.
“In addition, huge legacy projects being executed by the APC-led administation include the Second Niger Bridge which is set to be completed in 2022, the reconstruction of the Lagos-Ibadan dual carriageway, the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano dual carriageway, the Abuja-Akwangwa-Lafiya-Makurdi highway which is being reconstructed and dualised.
“The initiation, completion and commissioning of the Lagos-Ibadan twin track railway line is another of such landmark projects delivered by the APC administration, even as more are underway.
“The PDP federal government failed to complete the Abuja-Kaduna railway line, which the President Buhari government completed and commissioned for the benefit of Nigerians.
“PDP needs to be reminded that It was because of its failures that Nigerians rejected it twice, in 2015 and 2019. This loss is obviously still haunting the PDP and has caused disarray within its ranks and created irreconcilable divisions”.
Akpanduoehehe mocked the PDP to deal with the crisis facing the party as many notable politicians continue to dump them for the APC.
Akpanudoedehe added: “For a party that failed in its 16-year governance and as an opposition party, if the PDP believes that Nigerians are ready to place the administration of the country in its hand, then the PDP is a victim of its folly.
“At this point, PDP’s rudderless leadership should deal with the crisis of confidence it suffers. Our democracy deserves a credible opposition which the PDP has woefully failed to provide. Other parties must now rise to the occasion and play the crucial role of opposition.
“Of course, the task of clearing the PDP rot is not a walk in the park considering the level of decay our nation sunk into under the watch of the PDP and the current efforts of PDP leaders to slow down our progress as a nation. However, this government, under the capable hands of President Buhari is focused and courageous enough to lead our country to its deserved place.”
Buhari’s Reference To Lagos During Interview Not Aimed At Tinubu – Shehu Garba
President Muhammadu Buhari’s spokesman, Garba Shehu has debunked sentiments that his reference to Lagos in his interview on Arise Television was directed at Bola Tinubu, National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC.
He said the President’s comment on the future of APC during the interview had nothing to do with Tinubu.
The President had said: “The hope of this administration is to see APC last beyond it. Therefore, we should allow the party to decide. You cannot sit there in Lagos, for instance, and decide on the fate of APC on zoning.”
However, some Nigerians believed that the President’s remark was targeted at the former Lagos State governor.
Clarifying the comment, Shehu, in a statement, said: “The Presidency wishes to distance President Buhari from a malicious campaign aiming to drive a wedge between him and a staunch ally, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
“This is nothing short of a mischievous attempt to drag the President into controversies. Our citizens and especially the members of the APC should not fall for this.
“The ruling party, the APC, unlike others before it is a popular political party owned by its entire membership, hence Mr. President was making the point during the 45-minutes interview that neither he nor anyone in the leadership could impose their wishes on the party.
“This is a basic consensus that binds the entire party leadership. The party leaders remain firmly committed to the principles that succession must be through the democratic norms and processes.
“The mention he made of Lagos was not a reference to the respected party leader, Senator Bola Tinubu, as the opposition party’s predatory designs would put it in order to damage the excellent relationship between the two of them.
“The President, the Asiwaju and the rapidly growing members of the party, want a dynastic succession of elected leaders.
“The APC should not be distracted from its progress as a democratic party.”
2023 Presidential Election: Atiku Debunks Reports Of Running With Soludo
Former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has debunked reports that distanced himself from the campaign posters that surfaced in Abuja recently linking him and former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Professor Charles Soludo, for the 2023 presidential election.
In a statement signed by his media adviser, Paul Ibe, Atiku said rather than thinking of the next election, he is preoccupied with helping to find remedies to the current challenges facing the country.
According to the statement, “Our attention has been drawn to reports in some sections of the media, of campaign posters of His Excellency Atiku Abubakar and Prof. Charles Soludo, an aspirant in the Anambra State governorship election, in some parts of Abuja.
“Ordinarily, we would have ignored the reports, but for the interest of those who may be misled by the disingenuous plot, we know nothing about the posters or those who may have promoted it.
“It is obvious that this is the work of mischief. For the avoidance of doubt, Atiku is of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), while Soludo is of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA). It is silly of anyone to attempt to drag the former vice president into an election in Anambra State which outcome will be determined by the people of the state.
“Atiku is presently preoccupied with other well-meaning Nigerians to help find solutions to the myriad of challenges plaguing our country such as insecurity and economic downturn marked by joblessness and extreme poverty.
“That explains why last Monday, the Waziri of Adamawa unveiled the headquarters of Standard Micro Finance Bank and two factories promoted by him in Yola, the Adamawa State capital, to provide jobs and opportunities.”
Ibe started in the statement that: “We wish to restate that the purported 2023 campaign posters in circulation linking Atiku with Soludo is the handiwork of mischief makers, and should be ignored.”
