Nigerian Government Can’t Reject EndSARS Panel Report – Falana
The Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the Federal Government do not have any grounds to reject the judicial panel report on the #EndSARS incident, a Senior Advocate has said.
The report, against claims by the federal government, concluded that Nigerian soldiers and police on October 20, 2020, shot and killed unarmed protesters while they were waving the Nigerian flag and singing the national anthem during a protest against police brutality.
According to Femi Falana, “Upon the conclusion of the assignment last week, the commission submitted ‘a full report in writing of its proceedings, findings and recommendations, records, opinions, and reasons leading to its conclusions’ in line with Section 15(1) of the Law,” Mr. Falana said in a speech when some leaders of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights visited him in Lagos on Thursday.
“Thereafter, the governor set up a four-member committee of cabinet members headed by the state Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Moyosore Onigbanjo (SAN), to advise him concerning the position of the government which will be contained in a white paper.
“We are not unaware of the purported rejection of the report of the commission by the Minister of Information and Culture, Mr. Lai Mohammed, and the pressure on the White Paper Committee by some anti-democratic forces to advise the governor to jettison the findings and recommendations of the commission.”
Mr. Falana also added that the minister of information and culture has to take responsibility for his action at the height of #EndSARS in October 2020.
“The Federal Government lacks the legal competence to reject the report of a panel of inquiry duly constituted by the Lagos State Government. Therefore, Governor Sanwo-Olu should not hesitate to reject the gratuitous call for the rejection of the report of the Lagos Judicial Commission by Mr. Lai Mohammed,” he concluded.

The Peruvian Government Has Officially Classified Transgender, Nonbinary And Intersex People As “Mentally ill”
According to the country’s ministry of health, the controversial decision was made to ensure the country’s public health services could “guarantee full coverage of medical attention for mental health” for the trans community.
It also categorises “dual-role transvestitism,” “fetishistic transvestism,” and “other gender identity disorders” under the same bracket of mental illness.
The new law will change language in the Essential Health Insurance Plan (PEAS) to reflect the view of trans and intersex people as a mental health disorder.
Trans groups across Peru have loudly condemned the decision as a step backwards for the country’s already complex relationship with LGBTQ+ rights.
