British High Commission Honours King Charles III, Celebrates UK-Nigeria Diaspora Bonds

The British High Commission in Abuja hosted a reception on Wednesday evening to celebrate the 77th birthday of His Majesty King Charles III, bringing together over 600 distinguished guests under the theme of “Living Bridge”, highlighting the deep and enduring diaspora connections between the United Kingdom and Nigeria. 

The event, attended by Nigerian government officials, business leaders, members of the diplomatic community, and civil society representatives, celebrated the strength of UK-Nigeria relations at a time when the bilateral partnership has never been stronger.

In his remarks, British High Commissioner, Dr. Richard Montgomery CMG, emphasised the significance of the Living Bridge that connects the two nations:  

“Tonight’s celebration of the King’s Birthday here in Nigeria is particularly meaningful because it represents something truly special – the Living Bridge that connects our two nations. This bridge conveys more than people; it conveys opportunity.  

“Our Strategic Partnership, signed last year, has elevated our bilateral relationship, focusing on areas of mutual interests.  We are partners who respect each other’s sovereignty whilst working together toward shared security and prosperity.” 

The High Commissioner highlighted the record-breaking trade relationship between the two countries, which now stands at £7.9 billion, and noted that hundreds of thousands of Nigerian heritage call the UK home, enriching British society whilst maintaining precious connections that make the relationship vibrant. 

The celebration showcased an art gallery demonstrating diaspora connections and provided networking opportunities for guests from across government, business, and cultural sectors.
