The United Kingdom has expressed shock over the collapse of a three-storeyed building at Ita-Faaji area of Lagos Island, where several people including school children were feared dead, and others trapped in the rubbles.

The British High Commissioner in Abuja, expressing her concern over the tragic incident via her Twitter handle on Wednesday afternoon, said she was “Shocked and saddened by news of the building collapse in Lagos yesterday.

‘My thoughts and prayers are with those who have lost loved ones, with those who have been rescued, those still trapped and the rescue team. I hope there will be more survivors this evening.

“Our thoughts are with those who have lost loved ones in this tragic disaster, and we wish those injured a swift and full recovery.”

Bodies of school children and other occupants of the building are being recovered from the rubble of the collapsed building as rescue efforts are underway.

The topmost floor of the three-storeyed building has been converted to a nursery and primary school, and the building collapsed while classes were in session, with some scores of children thought to been trapped inside the rubble.
